Adult Literacy in a Changing World: Effective Programs for Today

December 1, 2021 by Kathryn Bauchelle

Thank you so much for coming! This event is now over.

Check the Literacy Texas YouTube channel for recordings from this session, and from many others.

Have you considered starting an adult literacy program?

Maybe you’re at a nonprofit with a different mission – but you’ve wondered about expanding your existing services to include high school equivalency, tutoring, or English classes?

Or perhaps you’ve been in the adult literacy field for a while – but the world’s changing around you and you need new ideas for these new times?

Join us for this special online training session, where we’ll explore the core elements of effective adult literacy programs – for those just starting out, those re-starting after a couple of tumultuous years, and those who could do with refreshed ideas to make existing programs really shine.

This special session is presented by Tarrant Literacy Coalition in partnership with Literacy Texas, and takes the place of the DFW Symposium for 2022. It’s offered free of charge to educators, volunteer tutors, ESL teachers, and other library and nonprofit professionals who work in the fields of adult and family literacy (or would like to!) across Texas – and beyond.

The training will be held online on Saturday, June 25, 2022, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm. Check-in for registered participants will open on Zoom at 8:45 am.

Schedule (subject to change)

8:45 am – 9:00 am — Check-in online

9:00 am – 10:00 am | Welcome; “State of the State” for Adult Literacy in Texas + Q&A
What’s changed since the pandemic? What are common challenges adult literacy programs are grappling with? What resources are out there?
Presenters: Wes Young – Tarrant Literacy Coalition; Kathryn Bauchelle – Literacy Texas

10:00 am – 11:00 am | Building on a Solid Foundation + Q&A
The best adult literacy programs know the communities they serve, and treat adult learners as valued and equal partners in their own learning. So how can you accurately assess the needs in your community? How do you get buy-in from partners – and your own organization? What are the core elements of a robust and regionally responsive adult literacy program?
Presenter: Faye Beaulieu – United Way of Tarrant County; Wes Young – Tarrant Literacy Coalition

11:00 am – 12:00 pm | Getting Creative for Flourishing Partnerships + Q&A
Federally funded Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) programs and community-based organizations (CBOs) do similar work in different ways. How can we build strong partnerships between these two programs? How can the sum be greater than the parts?
Presenters: Jauneen Maldonado – Workforce Solutions Tarrant County; Lester Meriwether – Literacy ConneXus

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm | Making Your Program Shine + Q&A
Quality really matters in adult literacy. Not only does it make your program robust and help you show long-term results, it’s also crucial to showing adult students that it’s worth their time and sometimes considerable difficulty to make it to class. How can you design a program that will put adult learner persistence in the forefront? What curricula are recommended and why?
Presenters: Ronnie Horton – ESL Teacher, Saginaw Public Library; Wes Young – Tarrant Literacy Coalition

1:00 pm – 2:00pm | Getting the Word Out + Q&A
You can have the best-designed program in the world, but if no one knows about it, you won’t help many people. What role do communications and marketing play, as you look for volunteers and let prospective students know about your program? How can you use plain language to make things easier for everyone – including you?
Presenters: Dr. Cindy Kilpatrick – English Language Institute, UT Arlington; Kathryn Bauchelle – Literacy Texas

2:00 pm – 3:00 pm | Demonstrated Results + Q&A
Every program needs to show that it’s making a difference – that really matters to the learners, to the volunteers, to those managing the program – and to funders. What assessment tools can you use to track student progress? How can you build in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) principles? And what about training for your instructors, to help make them the best they can be?
Presenters: Joan Grigsby – Adult Reading Program, Tarrant Literacy Coalition; Dr. Cindy Kilpatrick – English Language Institute, UT Arlington

3:00 pm – 3:30 pm | So, where to now?
Presenters: Wes Young – Tarrant Literacy Coalition; Kathryn Bauchelle – Literacy Texas
