We believe every person in Texas has the right to literacy.
Our work focuses on getting nonprofits and other literacy providers the training and resources they need, to help adults and families to the highest possible standard.
We have a special focus on providing professional development for tutors, staff, instructors, and volunteers at nonprofit organizations providing adult literacy services.
Literacy-focused nonprofits and other organizations in Texas help more than 90,000 people who don’t yet read, write, and/or speak English at a level that would let them reach their full potential. But there are currently 4.8 million adults in Texas who need this sort of help – leaving a large group of people currently not getting the assistance they need.
We use many methods to support literacy across Texas, including:
- Resources hosted here online,
- An annual series of free regional symposia,
- Online training (The Expert Edge) and hosted discussions (Best of Texas),
- Leadership training (What Leaders Need), and
- Our annual conference, which hosts 300+ literacy professionals every year for networking and professional development.

Literacy Texas is here to provide support and empower literacy nonprofits with training and best practices so they can focus on what they do best: Working alongside adults and families as they strive to improve their lives through literacy.
Because literacy transforms Texas, and is the key to a brighter future for us all.
