About This Session
Description
Throughout the years, tutors and instructors comment that students are unable or willing to complete classwork outside class. The assumption that students know how to study may be the issue.
This presentation focuses on the why and how of studying for adult learners with activities to make it all interesting!
What we'll cover:
This session is a discussion of study skills as they apply to our adult learners. Often time, classes or tutor session have a limited amount of time to meet, sometimes 1-2 hours, once or twice a week. Yet research tells us that to truly learn material (from short- to long-term memory), frequent practice is needed to reinforce instruction or increase skill building. Students need to spend time reviewing and practicing materials beyond the time they spend with instructors. However, this “homework” suggestion / recommendation rarely happens for students, to the frustration of many tutors and teachers.
There are a few issues we will review – identifying time to study, effective study processes, and how to study! We will talk about your own studying experiences, and how we can better address the realities of our students’ busy lives, all with the goal of helping them effectively achieve their personal educational goals.
