The 6 Principles of Adult Learning

As adult educators, we practice Andragogy. Andragogy focuses on the unique ways in which adults learn. In this session, we will explore the differences between andragogy and pedagogy, examine the 6 principles of Andragogy, and discuss some strategies for using them in the adult education classroom.

Wayne Crandall has been in adult education for more than 20 years. He has taught both ABE/ASE and ESL classes, has been AEL Program coordinator, and is an AEL Trainer. He is currently a Field Professional Development Specialist with the TRAIN PD @TCALL, where he develops PD content, trains adult education teachers, and assists Texas Adult Education programs with their professional development needs.

Increasing Motivational Self-Awareness for Adults

In this 90-minute session, participants will learn about The Framework for Culturally Responsive Teaching and the characteristics of adult learning culture with a focus on age, culture, and memory. We will learn about characteristics that are necessary for a person to be a motivational instructor and four conditions that enhance adult motivation to learn.

Participants will also reflect on their own philosophy of teaching, learning, and motivation.

Presenter: Dr. Olga Escamilla

TCALL – Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy & Learning

Dr. Olga Escamilla has over 26 years of experience in adult education, and currently serves as a PD Specialist with TRAIN PD @ TCALL. She has served as a teacher’s aide, data entry, ABE Instructor, AEL Supervisor, Professional Development Grant Coordinator, AEL Director, Job Coach, and Workforce Case Manager.

She has served as a Senior Lecturer with TAMUK- Masters of Adult Education program since 2009.

Dr. Escamilla served as on the COABE Board as Region-4 Representative from 2019 – 2022.

How Knowing Your Students Helps

An essential part of adult learning principles is that it is student-centered. As such, it is imperative that you know your students. In this session, we will look at how knowing your students can help.

Engaging Students With Motivational Interviewing

Join in on this session as the presenter highlights research-based strategies used for student interviewing. Learn how to ask the right questions to strengthen students’ motivation towards achieving their goals.

Participants will identify the Motivational Interviewing principles that draw on a student’s voice and accountability to drive positive change.
