Reading From Behind Bars – Literacy Connections

Come take a peak at how Women’s Storybook Project of Texas is making it possible for incarcerated mothers to connect with their children and encourage literacy through stories, read aloud, recorded and delivered to children.

About This Session

Description

In this session, WSP_TX will provide details about their program within TDCJ women’s prisons to encourage maternal efficacy and family literacy. Mothers can read and record for their children once a month, for six months.

The books and recordings are sent to the child each month. Veterans of 23 years working in the system, we’ll highlight our impact and the lessons we’ve learned along the way.

What we'll cover:

Objectives:

  1. Explore the mission of Women’s Storybook Project and structure of the organization
  2. Review the importance of stories read aloud and the impact of hearing your mother’s voice
  3. Attendees will understand the SOP’s of managing 13 program sites and over 300 volunteers and how WSP has grown the number and longevity of our volunteers

Women’s Storybook Project of Texas

Jill Gonzalez, M. Ed. is an advocate for literacy. Her work has been primarily in elementary education and literacy related nonprofit organizations. Since 2018, she has been the executive director of Women’s Storybook Project of Texas, whose mission is to connect children with their incarcerated mothers through the joy of literature.

She is a strong believer in the transformative power of stories and books read aloud. She is a certified Master Reading Teacher and completed her graduate work at U.T. Austin.

Hadley Jauer
Program Manager
Women’s Storybook Project of Texas

Hadley Jauer, MSW, has been with Women’s Storybook Project for a year and has recently transitioned from Volunteer Manager to Programs Manager. She comes to volunteer and programs management naturally and has worked diligently to build and build up the volunteers at WSP.

Hadley is a dog mom and loves spending time with her babies. Hadley is a south central Texas native.
