About This Session
Description
What do you do when your adult student’s foundational reading skills are far below the curriculum’s expectations?
Teaching reading is hard, but decades of research provide clear guidance on what works best. In fact, around 60% of readers need explicit instruction to learn to read. This can include, but is not limited to, students with dyslexia and those who have English oral language proficiency but struggle with the fundamentals of reading and writing in English.
Effective literacy instruction isn’t just helpful—it’s necessary.
Join two Licensed Dyslexia Therapists from Neuhaus Education Center for an interactive session where we’ll explore research-based reading practices that can be implemented immediately. These strategies support all learners and are essential for our most vulnerable.
What we'll cover:
- Briefly review the established research around learning to read
- Briefly discuss structured literacy, its components (the what and the how), and considerations for vulnerable populations such as those with specific learning disabilities and those who are learning English.
- Spend ample time engaging in examples of structured literacy practices related to phonological awareness, syllable division, and morphemes that can be immediately implemented into instruction
