About This Session
Description
In this presentation, we explore the pivotal role of executive function (EF) skills in shaping students’ reading abilities.
As educators, understanding how EF impacts various aspects of reading—such as decoding, comprehension, and engagement—is crucial for effective instruction. We’ll dig into evidence-based strategies that empower teachers to support EF development in the adult literacy classroom, ultimately leading to improved reading outcomes.
Additionally, we’ll discuss the alignment between EF-focused approaches and Structured Literacy principles. The session includes an introduction to EF, an explanation of EF’s role in reading, how Structured Literacy and EF are connected, research-based strategies for EF in the classroom.
What we'll cover:
1. Enhanced Teaching Practices: Educators who attend this session will gain a deeper understanding of executive function (EF) skills and their influence on reading abilities. Armed with this knowledge, they can refine their teaching practices to better address the specific needs of learners.
2. Improved Reading Comprehension: By recognizing how EF impacts decoding, comprehension, and engagement with written material, educators can tailor instruction to enhance students’ reading comprehension. Strategies discussed during the session will empower educators to scaffold learning effectively.
3. Equipped with Practical Tools: Participants will leave the session equipped with practical tools and strategies. These include metacognitive techniques, lesson-planning approaches, and ways to foster EF development in adults. Implementing these tools in the classroom can lead to improved reading outcomes for learners.
4. Inclusivity and Differentiation: Structured literacy, coupled with an understanding of EF, benefits all learners. Educators will learn how to differentiate instruction based on individual EF profiles, ensuring that students receive targeted support.
5. Confidence and Empowerment: As educators apply evidence-based practices, they’ll feel more confident in addressing EF-related challenges. This empowerment translates into a positive impact on learners’ confidence and motivation.
