Reading to Learn – Strategies for the Struggling Learner

About This Session

Description

Reading is a skill that is important for learners across all instructional levels and subjects; however, not all Adult Education instructors have had specialized training in how to teach reading at all or specifically, academic reading across the disciplines.

For our learners to be successful in establishing foundational skills and a solid academic knowledge base, it is important to train teachers in the “how-to” of teaching not only basic reading skills but also the more advanced skills needed to help the struggling readers. The struggling readers are those who miss the GED or HiSET by just a few points in any subject that is reading intensive like science, social studies, literature and even math.

While reading is an important subject, a student-centered approach of integrating writing as a part reading will be included in the training.

What we'll cover:

This training is designed to provide instructors guidance that will enable them to help learners navigate reading instruction by focusing on several researched-based approaches that target the relevant reading needs of learners.

Specific reading challenges for history, science, literature and math will be discussed. Participants will gain additional knowledge of Tier II Vocabulary that contains cross-curricular vocabulary.

This will be an interactive session with several activities to help participants become familiar with the strategies and gain an understanding on how to use the techniques and strategies with their learners.

Objectives include:

  1. To improve the understanding of the fundamentals of brain-based learning;
  2. To improve classroom strategies by incorporating active learning techniques into instruction;
  3. To encourage participants to challenge learners by incorporating critical thinking skills in the classroom.
