A is for Adult: An Introduction to Andragogy (2 part session)

 In this interactive session, participants will explore some of the major tenets of teaching adults, including Malcom Knowles’ assumptions and principles of andragogy.

Group discussions of adult learning theory, motivators, barriers and drivers of persistence of adult education students will allow participants to have a greater understanding of how to reach students in a meaningful way.

Presenter: Wayne Crandall

Wayne Crandall has been in adult education for about 20 years. He has taught both ABE/ASE and ESL classes, been an AEL Program coordinator, and is an AEL Trainer. He is currently a Field Professional Development Specialist with the TRAIN PD @TCALL, where he develops PD content, trains adult education teachers, and assists Texas Adult Education programs with their professional development needs.

Leave the Drama at the Door: Practical Problem-Solving Skills for Work (2 part session)

Learn strategies for good decision-making skills, common work etiquette skills, and how to leave the drama at the door for successful team-building.

Working closely as a team requires making intentional daily decisions that move processes forward with good problem solving strategies. A common understanding of work etiquette is also an important component to a successful work environment.

Presenter: Tiffany Johnson

Tiffany Johnson has served Victoria College for over 20 years and currently serves as the Director of Adult Education. She has served in various AEL roles, including instructing, career navigating, test proctoring, and distance learning. In addition, she has worked with many programs providing trainings for program improvement. She is passionate about student success and assisting students with obtaining the skills and training needed to build better futures for themselves and their families.

Tiffany is active in the community and currently serves on various boards, including Golden Crescent Workforce Development Board, GEDTS National Leadership Team, Victoria College Pathways Success, and the Texas Association for Literacy and Adult Education.

Reach Them and Keep Them: Recruitment & Persistence (2 part session)

This workshop helps administrators and instructors consider alternate recruitment strategies for different student populations, including low-literate adults. Participants will also review some tools for community building and active engagement in and between classes to improve student persistence.

How to Combat Negativity With Team-Building for Everyone (2 part session)

Adult educators work in a fast-paced environment of constant change. Keeping a positive balance can be difficult at times, both individually and as a team.

Learn some strategies for combating negativity in the workplace, and for developing new work habits that will assist with team building. This session will also pull together the Leadership at Every Level series strategies learned with targeted activities.
