Description

Teachers of adult language learners often hear stories of learners trying out their new English skills in the community, and being ignored or rebuffed because of their accent. In this workshop, learn about what happens in the brain when a different accent is detected and how that impacts people’s interactions.

Participants will roleplay ways to interrupt accent bias and advocate for English language learners in their communities.

What we'll cover:

  • Learn about accent bias research and the impact that accents have on the brain
  • How accent bias can result in discrimination for non-native speakers of English
  • Techniques for responding to accent bias when it happens
