About This Session
Description
Between 5% and 17% of the US population has dyslexia. However, in HISD public schools, in 2022, only 2.19% of students were identified with dyslexia. Many Texas adult literacy programs have adults struggling to read who have undiagnosed reading difficulties, including dyslexia.
Join Lara Speights, Licensed Dyslexia Therapist and Reading Specialist, for a conversation about dyslexia around the neuroscience, the red flags, and supporting these learners academically and emotionally.
What we'll cover:
- Collaboratively review current inequities surrounding dyslexia, especially related to how dyslexia is considered a disability of privilege
- Discuss dyslexia, its definition, what we know through neuroscience, and red flags in adult populations
- Consider research-backed practices that support the academic and emotional growth of learners with dyslexia.
