Keep ‘Em Coming Back! Retention Strategies for Growth and Success

About This Session

Summary

The struggle is real! Student retention is one of the most critical challenges in adult education. When attendance is down, student progress slows, and educator frustration grows.

In this session, we will explore the problem but, more importantly, seek practical solutions. Utilizing the innovative research and hands-on experimentation of adult educators across the country, teachers and administrators will gain applicable learning strategies and engagement activities to keep students coming back to continue their journey towards literacy and beyond!

What we'll cover:

Collaborate with other educators to explore the shared challenge of student retention. This session seeks to tackle common obstacles to sustained student attendance. With hands-on activities to address known needs, educators will be armed with tools to understand their students better, create targeted instruction, and keep learners on track to meet their personal goals. Self-directed and small group activities will provide teachers and administrators with actionable ideas for evaluation and application.

Session attendees will learn some of the unique characteristics, values, and needs of adult learners. We will explore what it means to create intentional, timely, relevant, and engaging instruction. We will examine classroom culture, strategies to support student motivation, personalized learning, and success skills. Session content will highlight the connection between relationships and retention and propose activities to strengthen this link.

Student assessment practices will move educators beyond reviewing numbers on a page to measuring, tracking, and celebrating student progress. Essential Education’s free retention guide, which will be highlighted in this session, will be your resource and springboard for educator collaboration and continued professional development. All attendees will receive a hard copy of the guide.

During our time together, we will dive into the following questions and see how each of them affect student retention:

  • Who are our students?
  • What do our students need to learn?
  • Where do our students learn best?
  • How do we better understand our students?
  • Why do our students want to learn?
  • When can we best support our students?
