About This Session
Summary
Actively engaging in literacy practices allows students to reach beyond barriers to access knowledge. Active learning experiences that include relevant texts and interactive literacy approaches motivate learners to progress in content knowledge and skills.
What we'll cover:
In this session, participants will learn about practical implementations of literacy approaches that motivate learners to read and collaborate in a low-risk environment. Opportunities to scaffold students with content, literacy development, and soft skills will be shared.
Arranged in small groups, participants will enjoy making connections while interacting with a variety of texts during a tabletop escape room/learning quest. Progressing through text sets centered on a relevant theme, participants will reach their goal and be able to synthesize the learning experience to implement in their learning contexts.
During an active learning experience, we will discuss and learn about the following instructional techniques:
- A feasible, systematic process to implement interactive literacy approaches.
- Motivating students to read and collaborate in a low-risk learning context.
- Incorporating relevant content while developing literacy skills.
- Including a variety of texts focused on specific content.
- Employing a gradual release of responsibility of learning in an active learning context.
