Innovative Partnerships Between a Community-Based Organization and the Public University

About This Session

Summary

In this session we put theory into practice: We will discuss our ongoing partnership between Texas State University’s M.A. program in Adult, Professional and Community Education and Community Action, Inc. of Central Texas adult education program.

This partnership promotes innovative teaching strategies to support ESL learning that is enjoyable and stress free. We will use scenarios and narratives from the literature as well as examples from our teaching experiences collaborating and implementing project-based learning strategies.

What we'll cover:

Educators may actualize their instructional methods to support language learners through more comprehensive teaching approaches. We aim to create a positive impact on their teaching practice by realizing that partnerships can be beneficial for both parties.

Conference attendees will draw implications and reflect on their practices teaching and designing English/literacy partnerships that focus on creating learning opportunities that go beyond the language classroom. This approach may support adult learner minorities in their acculturation and language learning process.

This is an interactive presentation promoting active learning. We describe classroom pedagogy and examples as well as outcomes. We also invite conference attendees to brainstorm about ideas they can transfer to their educational settings.

Reflection questions and hands-on activities such as scenarios and discussion will promote interaction and dialogue among conference attendees.
