Building Retention and Persistence
This interactive session will introduce participants to research on student persistence. Participants will be provided strategies for addressing areas identified by research that likely impact student persistence.
This session will explore the Six Main Characteristics of Adult Learners and will allow participants to share in a discussion on resilience, how to build and cultivate resilience and how it impacts Adult Education students.

Dr. Olga Escamilla has over 20 years of experience in adult education. She currently serves as a PD Specialist with [email protected]. She has served as a teacher’s aid, ABE Instructor, AEL Supervisor, PD Grant Coordinator, AEL Director, Job Coach, Workforce Case Manager, and Senior Lecturer.

Beyond Singing: The Power of Music in the ESL Classroom
This workshop illustrates how and why to use music to facilitate learning in the adult ESL classroom. The workshop includes hands-on practice of many activities that can be used immediately to promote grammar, speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Trainer: Dr. Glenda Rose
Dr. Glenda Rose has been teaching ESL to adults for three decades and has been intentionally including digital literacy since the early 1990s.

Beyond Poverty & Trauma Beginning with Adult Literacy
Adult education classrooms have a diversity that extends from students in poverty, exposed to trauma and/or needing literacy instruction. How do we integrate writing and reading instruction that help students overcome many challenges they face day to day?
Literacy is the key that can help unlock feelings of anxiety and fear in many of our students. Come explore ideas on teaching literacy that reach the heart and soul of our students.
Trainer: Theresa Sands
Theresa has a Master’s of Education degree with an emphasis in adult and higher education, and a reading specialist certification. She has been both a teacher and a supervisor in adult education programs.

Writing Through the Levels of ESL
In this workshop, participants explore several techniques to get ESL students writing – from the first day of their beginning class – and keep them writing through college and career preparation levels.

How to Develop an Effective Lesson Plan
This training is designed to help ABE/ASE/ESOL teachers focus on how to plan, develop, and write effective lessons. Hands-on and interactive activities will be included.
Participants will be allowed time to plan and develop a lesson plan that can be implemented in their classroom.

Irene Ramos has worked in the field of Adult Education for over 25 years as an instructor, supervisor and staff development trainer. She specializes in building capacity in program staff through innovative professional learning and development.

Incorporating Civics into ESL
This session will provide information to assist instructors in distinguishing between English Literacy and English Literacy Civics Education. Participants will explore the integration of civics instruction into the classroom and explore the use of various resources to develop lessons.
