Jeannie Ralston, author of
"The Unlikely Lavender Queen," reading to her sons Jeb, 9,
and Gus, 11. |
Ralston, who has read to her children since
they were small, is committed to helping the literacy effort in
Texas by donating a percentage of
on-line
sales of her book to Literacy Texas.
Literacy Texas is hoping that other authors will want to continue this model for giving back to our
important effort. We would like to recruit other authors to give a percentage of their book sales through
the Amazon Affiliate program to Literacy Texas. Please contact us if you are an author and are interested
in helping out at literacytexas@gmail.com. Let's get more Texans reading!
Reading is
BIG
in Texas Campaign
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Literacy Texas are promoting the significance of literacy
in Texas with the “Reading is
BIG
In Texas” campaign.
Why does reading need to be BIG in Texas?
- Reading has to be BIG to overcome this statistic: Texas ranks 47 out of the 50 states
in
terms of English literacy levels. (US Dept. of Education)
- Texas businesses need literate workers.
- Texas needs public and private support of literacy to improve our literacy levels.
- Texas needs sustainable literacy programs and volunteers to help all those in need of
literacy training.
- Literacy is an essential key to meeting our state’s pressing challenges and to reaching
our greatest potential, now and in the future.
The campaign’s goal is that more policy makers, individuals, organizations and businesses
than ever will be inspired to become part of the solution – literacy must become a priority in
our state.
