Free GREAT Center Trainings
The Central GREAT Center is offering three free trainings to anyone in the Central Region at the Austin Community College:
1) Contextualized ESOL for Transitions to Work & Training Academy
2) ABE/ASE Transitions Academy-Basic Strategies for College & Career Success
3) ESOL Reading for Transitions Academy
If you are a community-based literacy program, this is a great opportunity to take advantage of the expert trainings offered by your GREAT Center.

Please note that the first two face to face sessions all run consecutively on Friday and Saturdays at Austin Community College. The two (or three for ABE/ASE) follow-up sessions will be held with virtual participation available to cut down on travel time and costs.

October 14 & 15, 2011: Contextualized ESOL for Transitions to Work & Training Academy (sessions 1-2 of 4 total sessions) will be held from 9 am to 4 pm (both days) at the Austin Community College, Highland Business Center, Room 221, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin, TX 78751. Nationally known researcher Dr. Heide Spruck Wrigley will facilitate this academy. Teachers will learn about pathway models that link adult ESOL with technical trainings such as I-BEST and contextualized curricula. In addition, teachers will learn and implement strategies for improving student comprehension of common technical materials including charts, graphs, and multi-step instructions. Future sessions with Dr. Wrigley will be virtual, from 10 am – 1 pm, on January 14, 2012 and on February 18, 2012. Participants must attend all sessions. November 11-12, 2011: ABE/ASE Transitions Academy-Basic Strategies for College & Career Success (sessions 1-2 of 5 total session) will be held from 9 am to 4 pm at Austin Community College, Highland Business Center, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin, Texas 78751. The academy will be in room 407 on November 11, 2011 and in room 410 on November 12, 2011. Barbara Baird will facilitate all sessions. Teachers will learn how to apply adult learning theory and brain-based instruction strategies to support student transition to college and to engage their students using activities that address college readiness skills such as reasoning, problem solving, critical thinking, and study strategies. Follow-up sessions are devoted to sharing of strategy implementation in the classroom along with how to teach reading, writing and problem solving in the adult education classroom with college readiness in mind. Future sessions with Ms. Baird will be virtual, from 10 am – 1 pm, on December 17, 2011 and on January 28, 2012, and March 3, 2012. Participants must attend all sessions. December 2-3, 2011: ESOL Reading for Transitions Academy (Sessions 1-2 of 4 total Sessions)will be held from 9 am to 4 pm both days at Austin Community College, Highland Business Center. December 2, 2011 session will be in Room 221.0 at Austin Community College-Highland Business Center. December 3, 2011 session will be in Room 219.0 at Austin Community College-Highland Business Center. December 17, 2011 Virtual Session will be conducted out of Room 220.0 at Austin Community College-Highland Business Center. 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin, TX 78752. Nationally known researcher Dr. Heide Spruck Wrigley will facilitate this academy. Teachers will learn strategies and receive materials that help bridge the gap between lower level ESOL life-skills reading and the reading required for GED or college-level academic ESOL. They will also learn how to use recent research in reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition to transform their current ESOL materials into materials that offer reading skills development that support GED and college readiness. Future sessions with Dr. Wrigley will be virtual, from 10 am – 1 pm on February 11, 2012 and on March 24, 2012. Participants must attend all sessions!
