2011 Verizon Foundation Grant Funds Literacy Texas

FORT WORTH - The Verizon Foundation awarded a $15,000 grant to Literacy Texas to provide WorkReady! training to three Texas communities. WorkReady! is a unique workforce readiness training developed for instructors of low-level literacy learners who are currently enrolled in programs such as Adult Basic Education, GED preparedness or English as a Second Language.  The process is infusing work readiness skills into the standard literacy curriculum and providing the adult learner with the tools needed to succeed in the workforce.  WorkReady! was created to fill a gap that community-based organizations saw in preparing the lowest literacy adult for a job.

“The ultimate goal of WorkReady! is helping adult learners get a job, or a better job, while providing personal goals to help the learner with persistence,” said Literacy Texas Executive Director Debbie Johnson.  “Typically adult learners have jobs, but their skill level doesn’t allow them to move up. The WorkReady! concept prepares them to succeed in the workplace.”

Margaret Doughty, national literacy expert and creator of WorkReady!, designed the training so instructors could use all or some of the concepts suggested in the training. Each training participant leaves with a strategy to use the WorkReady! training in their program.

“WorkReady! training aligns with Verizon’s focus on improving the lives of low-literacy adults, “ said Carl Erhart, president – Southwest Region, for Verizon. “The return on investment in this type of training is huge: increased tax revenues, greater business productivity and decreased reliance on government financial support.”

Eileen Turner with the Collin County Adult Literacy Council said, “WorkReady! should be a critical component of every literacy program.  The training emphasized the fact that literacy programs can, and must, offer job readiness skills to our students.”
