Literacy Texas Honored as One of the 50 Champions of Literacy
In celebration of 50 years of service, Literacy Instruction for Texas (LIFT) honored 50 Champions of Literacy on September 7, 2011. Literacy Texas was one of the champions selected as an organization that is helping the Dallas-Fort Worth Area raise its literacy rate. Forty-nine percent of adults in Dallas read at or below the fourth grade level (The National Adult Literacy Survey).
“Literacy Texas is honored to be recognized as a LIFT Champion of Literacy. As a state literacy coalition, we see how big the need is for helping adults with low-literacy levels. 3.8 million adults in Texas need services like LIFT provides,” said Debbie Johnson, Literacy Texas’ Executive Director. “We congratulate LIFT on its 50 years of service and being one of the largest community-based organizations that provide literacy services in the state – serving over 8,000 people a year.”
Literacy Texas provides training and resources to literacy programs in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area through its annual statewide conference, New Director’s Training, WorkReady! and Financial Fitness Festivals.
ABOUT LIFT
Celebrating 50 years of service in 2011, LIFT’s mission is to enhance lives and strengthen communities by raising the adult literacy rate in Dallas-Ft. Worth. LIFT achieves this by providing quality family literacy, adult literacy, GED preparation and English as a second language (ESL) programs. LIFT serves approximately 8,000 each year with the inspiration and dedication of nearly 500 volunteers. LIFT students learn with peers in a classroom setting—they inspire and encourage each other. Because people with low literacy skills often feel ashamed and isolated, LIFT’s unique classroom approach provides learners with peer support and a sense of community that brings them hope and a belief in their ability to succeed.
