LITERACY TEXAS CHAMPIONS OF LITERACY AWARD
Literacy Texas is pleased to honor 10 Champions of Literacy on Tuesday, August 9, at 11:30 a.m., in conjunction with the annual Literacy Texas Conference.
2011 marks the tenth anniversary for Literacy Texas. In the beginning, the name was the Texas Association of Adult Literacy Councils. What started as an organization serving adults through literacy councils – bringing together community and faith-based programs using approaches from Laubach Literacy and Literacy Volunteers of America—has now become a statewide coalition across the age spectrum. Literacy Texas marks this anniversary by highlighting the literacy achievements of ten very special recipients.
Literacy Texas is honoring Freda Peppard as the visionary who started the organization; Nancy Crawford as one of the first board presidents and currently the Executive Director of the Literacy Council of Tyler; ProLiteracy for its worldwide leadership for community-based literacy programs; Dollar General for its support of hundreds of literacy organizations in 35 states; Verizon for recognizing that supporting literacy programs is an important component to the economic viability of its communities where its customers and employees live and work; Texas LEARNS for championing adult education; the Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning (TCALL) for supporting community-based organizations through the Volunteer Training Initiative; Susan Narvaiz, former mayor of San Marcos, for speaking out for the cause; Senator Carols Uresti for his vision that created the Texas Interagency Literacy Council and U.S. Congressman Ruben Hinojosa for championing literacy in Texas and at the national level as co-chair of the Congressional Adult Literacy Caucus in Washington.
