Literacy Texas 2011 Volunteer of the Year Award

We were proud to present Lupe Moreno with the Volunteer of the Year Award at the Literacy Texas Conference on August 8, 2011. Below is his nomination information from the Adult Literacy Council of the Concho Valley.
Lupe Moreno has been a volunteer with the Adult Literacy Council as long as I have been here—ten plus years as a volunteer for sure. He teaches ESL classes—open classroom—Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to noon. Students may come and go or stay the morning. Open classroom in every way. He may have four or fourteen students ranging in age from eighteen to eighty. He uses the Laubach approach for reading with a strong emphasis on phonics.
Mr. Moreno has a very positive attitude with laughter all through the day. On weekends, Mr. Moreno is a Boy Scout leader and participates in weekend retreats for the Scouts. He has recruited some of our students children to his troop.
Outcomes—Mr. Moreno has had students ‘graduate’ from his class to the GED classroom. Twenty-one of his students have gained citizenship since their involvement in his class. Two of the students have stayed in his classroom for approximately 8 years—coming regularly to learn, gain friendships, and participate in helping others to learn. One of his students—a lady from Columbia—is seventy-seven years old and she ‘acts as the hostess’ for his class and welcomes the new students and encourages them to interact with others. She particularly likes to talk about current events and News for You highlights.
Mr. Moreno has served on our board for six years. He is active in our fundraising efforts; he changes light bulbs, does plumbing work when necessary, answers the phones and opens our Council four days a week! Several years ago the director was locked out of the building. She was inappropriately dressed and had to call Mr. Moreno to lock the doors. (it was Sunday afternoon at 9:00p.m.) Mr. Moreno covered all bases and got the job done. He is SERVE WITH A SMILE!!!!
