Literacy Texas 2011 Adult Learner of the Year

We were proud to present Victor Morales with the Adult Learner of the Year Award at the Literacy Texas Conference on August 8, 2011. Below is his nomination information from the Adult Reading Center in Pearland, Texas.
Victor Morales began as a learner at the Adult Reading Center in January, 2009. His goal was to improve his skills in English. Since Victor was a dedicated and faithful student, he rapidly improved his command of the English language while progressing to the ASE Low Level. He continues to attend classes to increase his English skills and to observe the experienced instructors teaching at the Center. Victor became a Reading Center volunteer when he spoke at our Annual Red Hat Literacy Luncheon in 2010 as one of our featured learners. His carefully prepared speech impressed the 350 supporters present. During the day Victor also helps care for his grandchildren while his daughters work.
Over the years, Victor developed a strong desire and a new goal to give back to the community. In order to reach this goal, Victor has taught citizenship classes to 36 adult learners wishing to obtain their American citizenship over the last year. Victor, himself a Mexican immigrant who became a US citizen 25 years ago, was inspired to help others obtain their citizenship after volunteering to help the Adult Reading Center at the Immigration Forum last summer. The Immigration Forum, an annual event hosted by the Neighborhood Centers Inc. in partnership with the Adult Reading Center and local immigration attorneys, provides a venue for aspiring US Citizens to get information and legal help on their citizenship applications as well as referrals to the Adult Reading Center for English instruction classes, if needed.
After shadowing Adult Reading Center instructor Dr. Steiner as he taught citizenship classes, Victor felt comfortable taking on his own citizenship classes in August of 2010. Since the start of his classes, also free to the community, Victor has helped 10 of our learners pass their citizenship tests to become American citizens. Three additional students in Victor’s classes have scheduled their interview appointment for their citizenship in the near future. Since he began tutoring these learners, Victor has tutored a total of 737 hours.
When asked to comment on his passion for teaching, Victor humbly replied, “I like to be able to do something to help others. If I feel that I can help, then I will.” Victor is always looking to help more students. To attend Victor’s citizenship classes, interested students only need to call the Center and register to become students. Victor normally offers four two hour classes per week, in the morning and in the evening. However, he also teaches in a one-to-one tutoring situation if a learner cannot attend his classes. If a learner has a problem with transportation, Victor will meet the learner in a more convenient location. Mr. Morales goes the extra miles needed to help his learners reach their goals.
The Adult Reading Center is proud to nominate Victor Morales, our Citizenship Hero, as the Literacy Texas Adult Learner of the Year.
