WorkReady! Training Opportunity
Literacy Texas invites you to submit a proposal for a WorkReady! Training in your community. The Verizon Foundation has funded a grant to Literacy Texas to provide the workforce literacy program, WorkReady! for instructors in four Texas communities. WorkReady! is a unique workforce readiness training manual and training tool developed for the traditionally underserved group of adult learners who are currently enrolled in literacy programs such as Adult Basic Education, GED preparedness or English as a Second Language. It guides administrators, instructors, tutors and students of community-based literacy programs through a process of infusing workforce literacy into the standard literacy curriculum.
TALAE Recognizes Literacy Texas Board Member, Jon Engel, as Texas Adult Education Admin of the Year
Literacy Texas applauds Jon Engel on the TALAE recognition as 2012 Texas Adult Education Administrator of the Year. The Literacy Texas Board of Directors is honored to have Jon serving as a member of our Board and appreciates his time and expertise to champion better services for adult learners across Texas.
America’s Most Literate Cities, 2011
Central Connecticut State University released their annual America’s Most Literate Cities study. This study focuses on six key indicators of literacy: newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, educational attainment, and Internet resources.

LITERACY TEXAS CHAMPIONS OF LITERACY AWARD
Literacy Texas is pleased to honor 10 Champions of Literacy on Tuesday, August 9, at 11:30 a.m., in conjunction with the annual Literacy Texas Conference. 2011 marks the tenth anniversary for Literacy Texas. In the beginning, the name was the Texas Association of Adult Literacy Councils. What started as an organization serving adults through literacy councils – bringing together community and faith-based programs using approaches from Laubach Literacy and Literacy Volunteers of America -- has now become a statewide coalition across the age spectrum. Literacy Texas marks this anniversary by highlighting the literacy achievements of ten very special recipients.
Four Community Programs Receive Funding From Literacy Texas
Congratulations to Each One Teach One, San Antonio; East Side University Village Community Learning Center, Houston; South Texas Literacy Coalition, Edinburg and the Tarrant Literacy Coalition, Ft. Worth for winning the funding from Literacy Texas to host McGraw-Hill Companies’ Financial Fitness Festivals. Each of these organizations will receive $3,500 in reimbursements for expenses associated with their Festival.

Verizon Foundation Grant Funds Literacy Texas to Provide WorkReady! Training Designed to Help Low-Literacy Learners Get Better Jobs: The unemployment rate for people in the lowest literacy level is 14.7% compared with 4.9% for those at the highest levels.

The Literacy Texas Annual Conference is designed to meet the needs of a broad cross-section of organizations that provide literacy services from the small all-volunteer organization to the larger organizations with numerous paid staff. The conference features workshops of wide-ranging topics for your professional development. Literacy and adult education programs, community-based organizations that provide literacy services, literacy coalitions, libraries, faith-based literacy programs and family literacy programs -- executive directors, program managers, administrators, board members, volunteers, teachers and tutors.

The McGraw-Hill Research Foundation recently released a report that analyzed the effect of education on state and local economies, Texas included. The current sharp focus on deficit reduction in Washington, DC, and in state capitals around the country obscures the very real economic benefits U.S. society derives from its public investment in adult education and workforce development programs.
